There are so many things that I have learned since I started crocheting. Some lessons were easy, others a little challenging. Some lessons came from experience, others from inexperience (or just complete stupidity on my behalf.) Please come back and visit this page from time to time as I will add more hints and tips to my list as I am always learning too.
- Never be intimidated by a pattern. The only way you can learn is by trying it.
- When making something for the first time, READ the pattern before you start and FOLLOW the pattern while you are working.
- Use stitch markers. They are teeny tiny little magicians.
- Don't be lazy, do a swatch.
- There is nothing wrong with frogging. (Unravelling and starting over)
- There is nothing wrong with being a little creative with patterns. If you don't like that frilly border, don't add it.
- Do what the label says and ALWAYS make sure that you have enough yarn for your project.
- Never sew in the ends before checking and rechecking that everything is good.
- When adding pieces (such as on novelty hats and amigurumi) ALWAYS make sure the pieces are in the RIGHT place. Use pins or tacking if you need to.
- Character hats and amigurumi projects do NOT need to be perfect. That is what gives them personality and individuality which is what you WANT.
- Always have chocolate (or another yummy treats on hand) BUT don't eat while you are working.
- Liquid (hot chocolate, red wine, coffe etc.) and yarn do not mix.
- Keep a crochet journal. When you begin a project write down the brand of yarn, the hook size etc. If you are designing your own pattern or modifying another one WRITE it down so when someone says "OH!, that's beautiful. Can you make me one?" you can.
