A Steep Learning Curve

I have been crocheting for just over a year now. I was feeling pretty proud of myself, feeling as though I had progressed at least to an intermediate crocheter. HA, not so, at least that's what I thought when I first bought and took on the book Everyday Crochet by Doris Chan. (This is her blog http://dorischancrochet.com/)

Please forgive me Doris but I must say at first, I almost threw your book out of the window.  Initially I found reading her patterns very difficult until things finally clicked in this little brain of mine and I stared to "get" her writing style. My first experience involved lots of tears, muttering and unraveling. (Yes Doris, I broke some of your crochet rules too.)

Mostly constructed from shell patterns the tops, jackets and coats are created from the top down.  There is some shaping but the natural stretch and drape of shells make for a nice fit. The patterns at first seem daunting but really, they are quite easy once you get the hang of them. Just use a few sticky notes to mark where you are at and PLEASE make sure you USE STITCH MARKERS. (That's where I went wrong)

One thing that I really like about these patterns is that they are really easy to modify to fit your personal shape or style.  Make it longer, or shorter, add a collar (or don't) I have made (and slightly modified) two tops in one week and love both of them. Want an adventure and the opportunity to expand your skills, give these patterns a try. It is well worth the reward of all of those compliments and looks of amazement when you say "Thanks, I made it myself"
